Selections from Ziyarat al-Arbaeen of Imam Husayn (عليه السلام) as taught by Imam Sadiq (عليه السلام):

1. About Imam Husayn (عليه السلام): 

السَّلَامُ عَلَى الْحُسَيْنِ الْمَظْلُومِ الشَّهِيدِ السَّلَامُ عَلَى أَسِيرِ الْكُرُبَاتِ وَ قَتِيلِ الْعَبَرَاتِ

"Salutations upon al-Husayn (عليه السلام), the oppressed and the Martyred. Salutations upon the one captive in grief/sorrows and the Martyr of Tears."

أَشْهَدُ أَنَّكَ كُنْتَ نُوراً فِي الْأَصْلَابِ الشَّامِخَةِ وَ الْأَرْحَامِ الطَّاهِرَةِ لَمْ تُنَجِّسْكَ الْجَاهِلِيَّةُ بِأَنْجَاسِهَا وَ لَمْ تُلْبِسْكَ الْمُدْلَهِمَّاتُ مِنْ ثِيَابِهَا وَ أَشْهَدُ أَنَّكَ مِنْ دَعَائِمِ الدِّينِ وَ أَرْكَانِ الْمُسْلِمِينَ وَ مَعْقِلِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَ أَشْهَدُ أَنَّكَ الْإِمَامُ الْبَرُّ التَّقِيُّ الرَّضِيُّ الزَّكِيُّ الْهَادِي الْمَهْدِيُّ وَ أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ الْأَئِمَّةَ مِنْ وُلْدِكَ كَلِمَةُ التَّقْوَى وَ أَعْلَامُ الْهُدَى وَ الْعُرْوَةُ الْوُثْقَى وَ الْحُجَّةُ عَلَى أَهْلِ الدُّنْيَا وَ

"I bear witness that you were light in the sublime loins and purified wombs. The impurities of the Ignorance Era did not stain You, nor could its dark gloomy clothes dress upon You.

I also bear witness that you are one of the pillars of the religion, and the supports of the Muslims, and the refuge/stronghold of the believers.

I also bear witness that you are the righteous, pious, pleased, pure, the guide and the well guided.

And I bear witness that the Imams from your progeny are the word of piety, the signs of guidance, the firmest handle (of Islam), and the decisive Argument (Hujjah) upon the inhabitants of the world." 

2. About the role of Imam Husayn (عليه السلام): 

فَأَعْذَرَ فِي الدُّعَاءِ وَ مَنَحَ النُّصْحَ وَ بَذَلَ مُهْجَتَهُ فِيكَ لِيَسْتَنْقِذَ عِبَادَكَ مِنَ الْجَهَالَةِ وَ حَيْرَةِ الضَّلَالَةِ

 "So, He (i.e. Imam Husayn عليه السلام) called to You flawlessly, gave advice and sacrificed His soul for You, to save Your servants from ignorance and confusion of straying off (being misguided)."

3. About the killers of Imam Husayn (عليه السلام): 

وَ قَدْ تَوَازَرَ عَلَيْهِ مَنْ غَرَّتْهُ الدُّنْيَا وَ بَاعَ حَظَّهُ بِالْأَرْذَلِ الْأَدْنَى وَ شَرَى آخِرَتَهُ بِالثَّمَنِ الْأَوْكَسِ وَ تَغَطْرَسَ وَ تَرَدَّى فِي هَوَاهُ وَ أَسْخَطَكَ وَ أَسْخَطَ نَبِيَّكَ وَ أَطَاعَ مِنْ عِبَادِكَ أَهْلَ الشِّقَاقِ وَ النِّفَاقِ وَ حَمَلَةَ الْأَوْزَارِ الْمُسْتَوْجِبِينَ النَّارَ

"And gathered against Him - those who were deceived by this world, and who sold their share (of reward in hereafter) with the lowliest and meanest, and sold their Hereafter with the cheapest price, and were arrogant, were destroyed due to following their desires, and angered You and angered Your Prophet (ص) and obeyed from among Your servants the people of discord and hypocrisy and the carriers of burdens (of sins) who deserve the Fire."

4. About Us - The Shia of Imam Husayn (عليه السلام) 

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أُشْهِدُكَ أَنِّي وَلِيٌّ لِمَنْ وَالاهُ وَ عَدُوٌّ لِمَنْ عَادَاهُ

أَشْهَدُ أَنِّي بِكُمْ مُؤْمِنٌ وَ بِإِيَابِكُمْ مُوقِنٌ بِشَرَائِعِ دِينِي وَ خَوَاتِيمِ عَمَلِي وَ قَلْبِي لِقَلْبِكُمْ سِلْمٌ وَ أَمْرِي لِأَمْرِكُمْ مُتَّبِعٌ وَ نُصْرَتِي لَكُمْ مُعَدَّةٌ حَتَّى يَأْذَنَ اللَّهُ لَكُمْ فَمَعَكُمْ مَعَكُمْ لَا مَعَ عَدُوِّكُمْ

"O Allah, I bear witness - that I am a friend of those who are His friends and an enemy of those who are His enemies."

"And I bear witness - that I am a believer in You All (i.e. the Imams), and I am certain of Your return, by the laws of my religion and the outcome/seal of my deeds. My heart is at peace with Uour heart. My command is adhered to Your command. My support is prepared for You until Allah permits you. So I am with you, not with your enemy."
