Different opinions have been put forth by scholars as to where the Holy Head of Imam Husain (as) has been buried after being carried from Karbala to Kufa and then to Syria. 

Here we quote what has reached us from the narrations of the AhlulBayt (as).

Opinion 1 - Buried beside the Holy Grave of Imam Ali (as)

Hadith: 1

حدثني أبي ومحمد بن يعقوب، عن علي بن إبراهيم بن هاشم، عن أبيه، عن يحيى بن زكريا، عن يزيد بن عمر بن طلحة، قال:

قال أبو عبد الله (عليه السلام) - وهو بالحيرة -: اما تريد ما وعدتك، قال:

قلت: بلي - يعني الذهاب إلى قبر أمير المؤمنين (عليه السلام) -، قال: فركب وركب إسماعيل ابنه معه وركبت معهم، حتى إذا جاز الثوية ، وكان بين الحيرة والنجف عند ذكوات بيض نزل ونزل إسماعيل ونزلت معهم، فصلى وصلى إسماعيل وصليت، فقال لإسماعيل: قم فسلم على جدك الحسين بن علي (عليهما السلام)، فقلت: جعلت فداك أليس الحسين (عليه السلام) بكربلا، فقال: نعم ولكن لما حمل رأسه إلى الشام سرقه مولى لنا فدفنه بجنب أمير المؤمنين (عليه السلام)

When Imam Sadiq (as) was in Hirah, he asked the narrator, "Don’t you want that which I promised you?" 

"Yes," I replied – he meant going to the grave of Amirul Momineen (as). 

The Imam mounted and his son, Ismail also accompanied him. I also mounted and we set out till we passed Thawiyyah and stopped between Hirah and Najaf, besides white and bright sand. Imam (as), his son, Ismail and I descended and we all prayed there. Then Imam (as) said to Ismail, "Stand up and salute your grandfather, Husain bin Ali (as)." I asked, "May I be sacrificed for you! Is Husain (as) not in Kerbala?"

Imam (as) replied, "Yes, but when his severed head was being taken to Syria, one of our friends stole it and buried it besides Amirul Momineen (as)."

Hadith 2:

عدة من أصحابنا، عن سهل بن زياد، عن إبراهيم بن عقبة، عن الحسن الخزاز، عن الوشاء أبي الفرج، عن أبان بن تغلب قال: كنت مع أبي عبد الله (عليه السلام) فمر بظهر الكوفة فنزل فصلي ركعتين، ثم تقدم فصلى ركعتين، ثم سار قليلا فنزل فصلي ركعتين، ثم قال: هذا موضع قبر أمير المؤمنين (عليه السلام)، قلت: جعلت فداك والموضعين اللذين صليت فيهما؟ قال: موضع رأس الحسين (عليه السلام) وموضع منزل القائم (عليه السلام)

Narrated by Aban bin Taqlub who said, 

"I was with Aba Abdillah Imam Sadiq (as) while we passed through the backside of Kufa, the Imam (as) got down and prayed 2 units of prayers, then the Imam (as) moved forward and prayers another 2 units of prayers and then moved a little bit and prayed another 2 units of prayers. Then the Imam (as) said, "This is the place of the grave of Amir al-Momineen (as)."

I (narrator) said, "May I be sacrificed for You, what about the other 2 places You prayed at?" 

The Imam (as) replied, "One is the place of the head of Imam Husain (as) and other is the place of house of al-Qaim (atfs)."

Hadith 3:

حدثني محمد بن الحسن ومحمد بن أحمد بن الحسين جميعا، عن الحسن بن علي بن مهزيار، عن أبيه علي بن مهزيار، قال:

حدثني علي بن أحمد بن اشيم، عن يونس بن ظبيان ، قال:

كنت عند أبي عبد الله (عليه السلام) بالحيرة أيام مقدمه على أبي جعفر في ليلة صحيانة مقمرة، قال: فنظر إلى السماء، فقال: يا يونس اما تري هذه الكواكب ما أحسنها، اما انها أمان لأهل السماء، ونحن أمان لأهل الأرض، ثم قال: يا يونس فمر باسراج البغل والحمار، فلما اسرجا، قال: يا يونس أيهما أحب إليك البغل أو الحمار، قال: فظننت ان البغل أحب إليه لقوته، فقلت: الحمار، فقال: أحب ان تؤثرني به، قلت: قد فعلت فركب وركبت.

ولما خرجنا من الحيرة، قال: تقدم يا يونس، قال: فأقبل يقول:

تيامن تياسر، فلما انتهينا إلى الذكوات الحمر، قال: هو المكان، قلت:

نعم، فتيامن، ثم قصد إلى موضع فيه ماء وعين فتوضأ، ثم دني من اكمة فصلى عندها، ثم مال عليها وبكى، ثم مال إلى اكمة دونها، ففعل مثل ذلك، ثم قال: يا يونس افعل مثل ما فعلت، ففعلت ذلك.

فلما تفرغت قال لي: يا يونس تعرف هذا المكان، فقلت: لا، فقال:

الموضع الذي صليت عنده أولا هو قبر أمير المؤمنين (عليه السلام)، والأكمه الأخرى رأس الحسين بن علي بن أبي طالب (عليه السلام)، ان الملعون عبيد الله ابن زياد لعنه الله لما بعث برأس الحسين (عليه السلام) إلى الشام رد إلى الكوفة فقال: أخرجوه عنها لا يفتن به أهلها، فصيره الله عند أمير المؤمنين (عليه السلام)، فالرأس مع الجسد والجسد مع الرأس

Narrated by Yunus Ibne Zabyan who said,

"I was with Imam Sadiq (as) when he was brought to Mansur Dawaniqi in Hirah,on a cloudless moonlit night, the Imam (as) looked at the sky and said, "Yunus! Do you see how beautiful these stars are? Indeed these planets of light are security for those in the heavens and We are security for those on the earth."

"Then he asked me to have the donkey and the mule saddled. Once they were ready, Imam (as) asked me which mount I preferred. I thought that since the Imam (as) would prefer the mule because it was stronger, so I said I prefer the donkey. But Imam (as) said, I would like that you give me the donkey, so I gave it to him and both of us rode" 

"When we came outside Hirah, Imam (as) asked me to move ahead and I did so. He kept on saying right and left till we came to some red gravel and the Imam (as) said, "This is the place." Then He moved slightly to the right where there was a spring of  water with which the Imam (as) did Wudhu. Then he moved to a mound and prayed besides it. Then he leaned over it and cried. Then he moved to a mound besides the first and repeated what he had done. Then said, "Yunus! Do as I did." so I did the same. 

After that the Imam (as) asked, "Yunus! Do you know where we are?" "No," I replied. 

The Imam (as) said, "The first place was the grave of Amir al-Momineen (as) and the second, the place of the head of Imam Husain (as)."

After the cursed Ubaidullah bin Ziyad sent the severed head of Imam Husain (as) to Sham, it was sent back to Kufa, but Ubaidullah said, "Take the severed head out of Kufa so that it does not create public unrest." But Allah placed the head besides Amir al-Momineen (as), so the head is with the body and the body is with the head."

*Note: Explaining the last sentence in the above Hadith, Allama Majlisi says the following:

بيان: قوله: فقال أي قال عبيد الله، قوله فالرأس مع الجسد أي بعد ما دفن هناك ظاهرا الحق بالجسد بكربلا، أو صعد به مع الجسد إلى السماء كما في بعض الأخبار أو أن بدن أمير المؤمنين صلوات الله عليه كالجسد لذلك الرأس وهما من نور واحد

"About the words of Imam Sadiq (as), "The head is with the body", i.e. after the Head was buried there (near Amir al-Momineen (as), it was attached with the body in Karbala. Or, it ascended with the body as we have in some ahadith. Or that the body of Amir al-Momineen (as) is like the body for the head of Imam Husain (as), since both of them are from the same light (noor). "

Opinion 2 - Buried along with His Holy Body in Karbala:

الأمالي للصدوق عن فاطمة بنت عليّ : إنَّ يَزيدَ لَعَنَهُ اللَّهُ أمَرَ بِنِساءِ الحُسَينِ عليه السلام ، فَحُبِسنَ مَعَ عَلِيِّ بنِ الحُسَينِ عليه السلام في مَحبِسٍ لا يَكُنُّهُم‌ مِن حَرٍّ ولا قَرٍّ ، حَتّى‌ تَقَشَّرَت وُجوهُهُم ، ولَم يُرفَع بِبَيتِ المَقدِسِ حَجَرٌ عَلى‌ وَجهِ الأَرضِ إلّا وُجِدَ تَحتَهُ دَمٌ عَبيطٌ ، وأبصَرَ النّاسُ الشَّمسَ عَلَى الحيطانِ حَمراءَ كَأَنَّهَا المَلاحِفُ المُعَصفَرَةُ ،إلى‌ أن خَرَجَ عَلِيُّ بنُ الحُسَينِ عليهما السلام بِالنِّسوَةِ ، ورَدَّ رَأسَ الحُسَينِ عليه السلام إلى‌ كَربَلاءَ

Narrated by Fatimah bint Ali (as);

"Yazid whom Allah has cursed, ordered the women folks of Imam Husain (as) to be made captives along with Ali bin Husain (as) in a prison which did not shelter them from the heat and cold such that (skin of) their faces were peeled off. And no stone was picked up from Bayt al-Maqdis but fresh blood was found under it. And the people saw the sun casting a red hue on the walls. Until Ali bin al-Husain (as) left (the prison) along with the women and returned the head of Imam Husain (as) to Karbala.
