Cowardice of Umar
Hadith 1:
Narrated that Imam Ali (عليه السلام) said the following addressing the council (Shura) setup by Umar to select the next caliph:
"I ask you by Allah, is there anyone among you to whom the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله) said when Umar returned (in the battle of Khaybar) accusing his companions of being coward and this companions called him a coward, and Umar had returned the Prophet's (صلى الله عليه وآله) banner while being defeated.
So the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله) said to him, "I will give the banner tomorrow to a man who is not going to run away, whom Allah and His Messenger love, and who loves Allah and His Messenger. He will not return until Allah gives him victory."
