Chapter: 5, Verse: 5 - Who is Faith (Imaan)?

محمد بن الحسن الصفار: عن عبد الله بن عامر، عن أبي عبد الله البرقي، عن الحسين بن عثمان، عن محمد بن الفضيل، عن أبي حمزة، قال: سألت أبا جعفر (عليه السلام) عن قول الله تبارك و تعالى: { وَمَن يَكْفُرْ بِٱلإِيمَٰنِ فَقَدْ حَبِطَ عَمَلُهُ وَهُوَ فِي ٱلآخِرَةِ مِنَ ٱلْخَٰسِرِينَ } ، قال: " تفسيرها في بطن القرآن: يعنى من يكفر بولاية علي، و علي هو الإيمان ".

Narrated from Abu Hamzah who said,

I asked Abu Jafar Imam Baqir (عليه السلام) about the saying of Allah (تبارك و تعالى), "And whoever denies faith (Imaan), then surely his deeds are of no use, and in the hereafter he shall be one of the losers." (5:5)

Imam (عليه السلام) said, "The inner (batini) tafseer of this is that it means 'Whoever denies Mastership (Wilayah) of Ali (عليه السلام). And Ali (عليه السلام) is faith (Imaan)."

Chapter: 5, Verse: 35 - al-Waseelah

عن ابي جعفر عليه السلام ... وقوله (اتقوا الله وابتغوا اليه الوسيلة) فقال تقربوا اليه بالامام

Narrated that Abu Jafar Imam Baqir (عليه السلام) said,

And regarding the saying of Allah (عز وجل), "O those who believe. Be mindful of your duty to Allah (Taqwa), and seek the means of approach/nearness to Him" (5:35)

Imam (عليه السلام) said, "Seek nearness to him through the Imam."

حدثنا أبو الفضل العلوى قال حدثنى سعيد بن عيسى الكربزى البصري عن ابراهيم بن الحكم بن ظهير عن ابيه عن شريك بن عبد الله عن عبد الاعلى الثعلبي عن ابى تمام عن سلمان الفارسىره عن امير المؤمنين عليه السلام في قول الله تبارك وتعالى قل كفى بالله شهيدا بينى وبينكم ومن عنده علم الكتاب فقال انا هو الذى عنده علم الكتاب و قد صدقه الله واعطاه الوسيلة في الوصية ولا تخلى امة من وسيلته إليه والى الله فقال يا ايها الذين آمنو اتقوا الله وابتغوا إليه والوسيلة

Narrated from Salman Al-Farasi from Amir al-Momineen (عليه السلام),

Regarding the saying of Allah (تبارك وتعالى), "Say: Allah is sufficient as a witness between me and you and whoever has knowledge of the Book" (13:43).

Imam (عليه السلام) said, "I am the one who has the knowledge of the Book and Allah (عز وجل) has attested this and has given me (as the) Means (Al-Waseelah) in the commandment (wasiyat) and has not left the community without the means (waseelah) towards Him (i.e. Imam) and towards Allah (عز وجل). As Allah has said, "O those who believe. Do your duty to Allah, and seek the means of approach/nearness to Him" (5:35)

ابن شهر اشوب، قال امیر المومنین : فی قوله تعالی وابتغوا إليه والوسيلة, انا وسیلته

Ibn Shahr Ashoob, Amir Al-Momineen (عليه السلام) regarding the saying, "Seek the means of approach to Him" (5:35) said, "I Am His Means (waseelah)."

Chapter 5, Verse: 55 - Meaning of Wilayat

الحسين بن محمد، عن معلى بن محمد، عن أحمد بن محمد، عن الحسن بن محمد الهاشمي، عن أبيه، عن أحمد بن عيسى، عن أبي عبد الله عليه السلام في قول الله عز وجل: " إنما وليكم الله ورسوله والذين آمنوا " قال: إنما يعني أولى بكم أي أحق بكم وبأموركم وأنفسكم وأموالكم، الله ورسوله والذين آمنوا يعني عليا وأولاده الأئمة عليهم السلام إلى يوم القيامة، ثم وصفهم الله عز وجل فقال: " الذين يقيمون الصلاة ويؤتون الزكاة وهم راكعون " وكان أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام في صلاة الظهر وقد صلى ركعتين وهو راكع وعليه حلة قيمتها ألف دينار، وكان النبي صلى الله عليه وآله كساه إياها، وكان النجاشي أهداها له، فجاء سائل فقال: السلام عليك يا ولي الله وأولى بالمؤمنين من أنفسهم، تصدق على مسكين، فطرح الحلة إليه وأومأ بيده إليه أن احملها: فأنزل الله عز وجل فيه هذه الآية وصير نعمة أولاده بنعمته فكل من بلغ من أولاده مبلغ الإمامة، يكون بهذه النعمة مثله فيتصدقون وهم راكعون والسائل الذي سأل أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام من الملائكة، والذين يسألون الأئمة من أولاده يكونون من الملائكة

Abu Abdillah Imam Sadiq (as) said;

About the words of Allah, the Most Holy, the Most High, "Only Allah, His Messenger, and the true believers who are steadfast in prayer and pay alms, while they kneel during prayer, are your guardians [Wali] (5:55)

The Imam (as) said, "It means to have greater right and authority to deal with your affairs, your souls and your property. Such right, priority and authority belong to Allah, His Messenger and the believers referring to Imam Ali (as) and the Imams (as) from his descendants until the Day of Judgment."

Then Allah (swt), has described them saying, ". . . the true believers who are steadfast in prayer and pay alms, while they kneel during prayer. " (5:55). Amir al-Mu’minin, Ali (as) was praying Zuhr prayer (early afternoon). He was in the second unit while in Ruku‘ (bowing down on his knees in prayer), wearing a gown worth a thousand Dinars (unit of money), which the Holy Prophet made him to wear and King Najashi had sent as a present to him. At such time a beggar came and said, "Be in peace O Allah’s authority (Wali) and the authority over the believers who possesses greater right and priority over them than themselves, give charity to a destitute person." Imam Ali (as) threw the gown to the beggar and pointed with his hand to pick up and take it. "

About this happening Allah (swt), sent this verse of the Holy Quran. He granted him His blessings in the form of his children. Whoever of his children who reaches the position of Imamat (Leadership with Divine Authority) would also give charity while bowed down in Ruku‘ of prayer.

The beggar that asked Amir al-Mu’minin Ali (as) for charity was from the angels. Those who ask the Imams (as) from his children will also be from the angels."

Chapter 5, Verse: 66

وَلَوْ أَنَّهُمْ أَقَامُوا التَّوْرَاةَ وَالْإِنجِيلَ وَمَا أُنزِلَ إِلَيْهِم مِّن رَّبِّهِمْ

"If they had stood fast by the Torah and the Injeel and that which was revealed unto them from their Lord.." (5:66)

حدثنا العباس بن معروف عن حماد بن عيسى عن ربعي عن محمد بن مسلم عن أبي جعفر عليه السلام في قول الله تعالى ولو أنهم أقاموا التوراة والأنجيل وما انزل إليهم من ربهم قال الولاية

Narrated from Abu Jafar (عليه السلام) regarding the Statement of Allah (تعالى), "If they had stood fast by the Torah and the Injeel and that which was revealed unto them from their Lord" (5:66)

Imam (عليه السلام) said, "(It is) The Wilayah (mastership)."
