9: al-Tawbah

Chapter 9, Verse: 23 - Preferring Kufr over Faith

Narrated from Abu Jafar Imam Baqir (ع) said the narrator asked the Imam about the saying of Allah,

"O you who have faith! Do not befriend your fathers and brothers if they prefer disbelief (kufr) to faith (Eman). Those of you who befriend them, it is they who are the wrongdoers." (9:23)

Imam (ع) said, "The inner (batin) meaning of Disbelief in this verse refers to the mastership of the first (Abu Bakr) and the second (Umar) and that is disbelief (Kufr). And Faith (Eman) is the mastership (Wilayat) of Ali ibn Abi Talib (ع).

Chapter: 9, Verse: 74: The Grants of Allah & His Prophet

It is written in Kanzul Fawaid by Karajaki that once Imam Sadiq Jafar bin Muhammd (عليهما السلام) was eating food with Abu Hanifa and after finisning, Imam Jafar bin Muhammad al-Sadiq (عليه السلام) said,

"All Praise/thanks is for Allah (عز وجل) the lord of the worlds, O Allah this was a blessing from You as well as from Your Prophet."

Upon hearing this Abu Hanifa said, "O Abu AbdAllah (عليه السلام)! Have you included someone else as Allahs partner (Shareeq)."

Imam Jafar al-Sadiq (عليه السلام) replied, "Woe to you. Indeed Allah (تعالى) says in His book, "……And they only stayed in opposition because Allah and His Messenger enriched them out of His grace….." (9:74)

And at another place Allah (تعالى) says, "If only they had been content with what Allah and His Messenger had gave them, and had said, "Sufficient unto us is Allah! Allah and His Messenger will soon give us out of their Kindness" (9:59)

Abu Hanifa then said, "By Allah! It seems I have never read these two verses from the book of Allah or heard someone reciting these verses before today."

Imam Jafar al-Sadiq (عليه السلام) said, "No, But you have read and even heard these Verses before, However, Allah (تعالى) says for you and people like you, "..Or are there locks on the hearts?" (47:24) and Says, "Nay, but that which they have earned is rust upon their hearts." (83:14)

Another hadith on verse that came in the above hadith:

From a long narration in which Imam Ali ibn Muhammad Naqi (عليه السلام) said,

"Rather, how can Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وآله) be completely described, while Allah has linked Him with His own name and has made the Prophet a partner in His grants and has made it necessary that the one who obeys the Prophet will get the reward of obeying Him (i.e. Allah) – when He says in Quran, "And they did not resent it except that Allah and His Messenger enriched them of His grace." (9:74)

Chapter: 9, Verse: 103

Narrated that Imam Sadiq (عليه السلام) said,

"Whoever claims that the Imam is in need of what is in the hands of the people is a disbeliever (kafir). It is the people who are in need that the Imam accepts from them. Allah (عز وجل) says, 'Take alms out of their wealth, you would cleanse them and purify them thereby " (9:103)
